Four seasons in one … hour. Farmers’ Market, October 22

At a late August market when the sun made its first appearance, one of the stallholders dared to venture that the winter was over. The fourth-Saturday market of October put paid to that theory, as – in Ruzi’s words – it wasn’t four seasons in one day, but four seasons in one hour.

In light of that, thank you very much to parents and children who … ahem … fronted the front.

Thanks to Liz Pye, Rachel and Bridget, Shane and Asha, Susie and husband Peter with Marieanne, Craig and Fiona with William, Meredith and Holly, Tamara and Camille, Janene and Millie, Kirrily, Sue and husband Ben, Jenny with daughters Janey and Scarlett, Siham and Diana.

Your help is, as always, much appreciated.

Cakes, democracy and gingerbread men …

The voting queue was at times ridiculously long at Coburg North on Saturday but Parents and Friends made sure to sweeten the experience for those exercising their democratic right at the school.

IMG_4667Our election day cake stall raised $530 and we couldn’t have done it without all the bakers who donated goods – thank you Amelia, Kirrily, Shelley, Andrea, Patricia, Sue, Anya, Michelle, Paul, Erika, Jenny, Jackie, Carolyn, Ruzi and Vanessa for your generous and delicious donations.

For those wondering why we only held the cake stall and did not hold a barbecue this year,  it was a decision made after much debate and consideration. In the end we decided that, as the farmer’s market is our major fundraiser, we did not want to draw business away from its food stalls. The market’s ongoing success depends on its stallholders.

Though a sausage sizzle would have raised more money, we were thrilled with how much the cake stall raised and how many people pitched in, right in the middle of the school holidays, to help make it a success.

A big shout-out has to go to the wonderful Sue, who coordinated the event and baked into the night, and through a disastrous jelly explosion, to make sure the stall was well stocked.

And also to Aaron, Ada and Camille (all pictured) for their excellent efforts in the sales department.

Farmers’ Market, May 28 – the show must go on

A special thank you to the parents who fronted the Antarctic vortex that swept through the school grounds on the day of the last May farmers’ market.

The rain barely let up all morning, so a huge thank you to the parents of Foundation C who braved the elements, as follows: Adytia and Chevalier, Jen and Beatrice, Phil and Cecilia with son Hugo, superstar Kalissa who stayed on well after her shift, Coralie and son Pascal, Kyra, Pwint and her son Bman, Rene and Elikya, Friska and Fatir, Tom and Artemis, Tarni and Ilya and Mike.

Thanks particularly to the clean-up team who were faced with a massive drying-out job of all the gear.

Your help is, as always, much appreciated.

Bumper Bunnings barbie

It was cold and there was rain, a lot of rain, but luckily the weather did little to dampen the general public’s enthusiasm for sausages and sauce in bread.

Coburg North Parents & Friends ran the barbecue at the Gaffney St Bunnings on Saturday, June 4.

As always, we are so grateful to our generous volunteers, especially those who were up early on a Saturday morning to start the ball, well barbecue, rolling (that’s you Elise, Gina and Mike).

We also feel very fortunate to have had so many fathers lend a helping hand, albeit looking a little worse for wear in some cases, after an apparently successful Dad’s Night Out the evening before.

In the end, we served up 70kg of sausages, 35 loaves of bread and 15kg of onions to make about $1800 for the school.

Thank you so much to Jackie, Lewy and Paul for hand cutting all the onions, and to our volunteers – Elise, Gina, Mike, Liz, Rachel, Justin, Ben, Matt, Kirrily, Diana, Paul and Chris – you are all awesome.

Thanks also to all the school families who showed their support by coming along to buy a sausage.

A “roo-lly” tasty lunch

Roo and rosella fruit were on the menu last Friday as Coburg North students marked Reconciliation Week  with a taste of indigenous fare.

The menu for this month’s lunch included roo sausage rolls, warrigal green parcels and shortbread made from rosella fruit – all of which proved popular with the hungry hordes.

It was great to have some new hands on board for the preparation and serving of the lunch- Parents and Friends always needs as much help as it can get, especially as the student numbers continue to rise!

Thanks as always to our resident chef Michelle – we know how much work you put in to planning and preparing the lunches each month – and her team of apprentices, including Meredith, Jackie, Jenny, Kerry, Allan, Paul, Catherine and Bolanle.

We are already starting to plan next month’s lunch so watch out for another yummy menu.

Have licences, will flip – Farmers’ Market, May 14

It was the turn of newly qualified pancake flippers, Foundation B, at the second-Saturday Farmers’ Market on May 14. Thankfully, we had a full complement of volunteers, as the stand was pumping by mid-morning with the grill firing on all burners by 10am. Just as well cool heads, Andrew Alves and Michelle Lorier, were on hand to make it look all  too easy.

So a big thank you to Jock and daughter Vera, Sian with son Thomas, Amelia with Rose and Lewis, Maria and daughter Emily, Dave and son Jack, Kerry and daughter Adeline, Andrew with daughters Greta and Esme, Michelle and daughters Isla and Nina and Mike and Sylvia with their kids Billy and Charlotte. A big thanks, too, to Sian, Amelia and Gina who helped midweek with the kids’ pancake licences. And, of course, to the unflappable Carla Bruce-Lee. Apologies to any volunteers who might have been forgotten.

The market again pushed us closer to our $9000 target for new basketball hoops and backboards.

Mum’s the word

So popular were the craft and sweet treats at this year’s mother’s day stall that a quick re-stocking was required on the day to keep all our eager shoppers happy.

Organised by the very crafty Erika and her team of volunteers, last Friday’s stall included an amazing array of handcrafted necklaces, bracelets and tote bags, as well as delicious and extremely pretty looking biscuits, succulents in teacups and homemade lipgloss.

This year’s stall raised $1750 for the school, almost doubling the takings of previous years.

Thank you so much to our wonderful Parents and Friends craft and cooking volunteers who helped stock the stall, and to those who helped out on the day.
